Chien-Shiung Wu A Pioneering Female Physicist
Chien-Shiung Wu, pioneering female physicist, experimentally confirmed the beta decay theoretical prediction of two male colleagues. Her work helped the two men win the Nobel Prize, but she was not recognized by the Nobel Prize committee. Chien-Shiung Wu Biography Chien-Shiung Wu was born in 1912 (some sources say 1913) and was raised in the town of Liu Ho, near Shanghai. Her father, who had been an engineer before he participated in the 1911 revolution which successfully ended Manchu rule in China, ran a Girls School in Liu Ho where Chien-Shiung Wu attended until she was nine years old. Her mother was also a teacher, and both parents encouraged education for girls. Teacher Training and University Chien-Shiung Wu moved to Soochow (Suzhou) Girls School which operated on a Western-oriented curriculum for teacher training. Some lectures were by visiting American professors. She learned English there. She also studied science and mathematics on her own; it was not part of the curriculum she was in. She was also active in politics. She graduated in 1930 as valedictorian. From 1930 to 1934, Chien-Shiung Wu studied at the National Central University in Nanking (Nanjing). She graduated in 1934 with a B.S. in physics. For the next two years, she did research and university-level teaching in X-ray crystallography. She was encouraged by her academic advisor to pursue her studies in the United States, as there was no Chinese program in post-doctorate physics. Studying at Berkeley So in 1936, with the support of her parents and funds from an uncle, Chien-Shiung Wu left China to study in the United States. She first planned to attend the University of Michigan but then discovered that their student union was closed to women. She enrolled instead at the University of California at Berkeley, where she studied with Ernest Lawrence, who was responsible for the first cyclotron and who later won a Nobel Prize. She assisted Emilio Segre, who was later to win a Nobel. Robert Oppenheimer, later leader of the Manhattan Project, was also on the physics faculty at Berkeley while Chien-Shiung Wu was there. In 1937, Chien-Shiung Wu was recommended for a fellowship but she did not receive it, presumably because of racial bias. She served as Ernest Lawrences research assistant instead. That same year, Japan invaded China; Chien-Shiung Wu never saw her family again. Elected to Phi Beta Kappa, Chien-Shiung Wu received her Ph. D. in physics, studying nuclear fission. She continued as a research assistant at Berkeley until 1942, and her work in nuclear fission was becoming known. But she was not given an appointment to the faculty, probably because she was an Asian and a woman. At that time, there was no woman teaching physics at the university level at any major American university. Marriage and Early Career In 1942, Chien-Shiung Wu married Chia Liu Yuan (also known as Luke). They had met in graduate school at Berkeley and eventually has a son, nuclear scientist Vincent Wei-Chen. Yuan obtained work with radar devices with RCA in Princeton, New Jersey, and Wu began a year of teaching at Smith College. Wartime shortages of male personnel meant she got offers from Columbiaà University, MIT, and Princeton. She sought a research appointment but accepted a non-research appointment at Princeton, their first female instructor of male students. There, she taught nuclear physics to naval officers.ââ¬â¹ Columbia University recruited Wu for their War Research department, and she began there in March of 1944. Her work was part of the then-still-secret Manhattan Project to develop an atomic bomb. She developed radiation detecting instruments for the project, and helped solve a problem that stymied Enrico Fermi, and made possible a better process to enrich uranium ore. She continued as a research associate at Columbia in 1945. After World War II After the end of World War II, Wu received word that her family had survived. Wu and Yuan decided not to return because of the ensuing civil war in China, and then later did not return because of the communist victory led by Mao Zedong. National Central University in China had offered both of them positions. Wu and Yuans son, Vincent Wei-chen, was born in 1947; he later became a nuclear scientist. Wu continued as a research associate at Columbia, where she was appointed an associate professor in 1952. Her research focused on beta decay, solving problems that had eluded other researchers. In 1954, Wu and Yuan became American citizens. In 1956, Wu began to work at Columbia with two researchers, Tsung-Dao Lee of Columbia and Chen Ning Yang of Princeton, who theorized that there was a flaw in the accepted principle of parity. The 30-year-old parity principle predicted that pairs of right and left-handed molecules would behave in tandem. Lee and Yang theorized that this would not be true for weak force subatomic interactions. Chien-Shiung Wu worked with a team at the National Bureau of Standards to confirm the theory of Lee and Yang experimentally. By January 1957, Wu was able to reveal that K-meson particles violated the principle of parity. This was monumental news in the field of physics. Lee and Yang won the Nobel Prize that year for their work; Wu was not honored because her work was based on the ideas of others. Lee and Yang, in winning their award, acknowledged Wus important role. Recognition and Research In 1958, Chien-Shiung Wu was made a full professor at Columbia University. Princeton awarded her an honorary doctorate. She became the first woman to win the Research Corporation Award, and the seventh woman to be elected to the National Academy of Sciences. She continued her research in beta decay. In 1963, Chien-Shiung Wu experimentally confirmed a theory by Richard Feynman and Murry Gell-Mann, part of the unified theory. In 1964, Chien-Shiung Wu was awarded the Cyrus B. Comstock Award by the National Academy of Sciences, the first woman to win that award. In 1965, she published Beta Decay, which became a standard text in nuclear physics. In 1972, Chien-Shiung Wu became a member of the Academy of Arts and Sciences, and in 1972, was appointed to an endowed professorship by Columbia University. In 1974, she was named Scientist of the Year by Industrial Research Magazine.à In 1976, she became the first woman to be president of the American Physical Society, and that same year was awarded a National Medal of Science. In 1978, she won the Wolf Prize in Physics. In 1981, Chien-Shiung Wu retired. She continued to lecture and teach, and to apply science to public policy issues. She acknowledged the serious gender discrimination in the hard sciences and was a critic of gender barriers. Chien-Shiung Wu died in New York City in February of 1997. She had received honorary degrees from universities including Harvard, Yale, and Princeton. She also had an asteroid named for her, the first time such an honor went to a living scientist. Quote: ââ¬Å"... it is shameful that there are so few women in science... In China there are many, many women in physics. There is a misconception in America that women scientists are all dowdy spinsters. This is the fault of men. In Chinese society, a woman is valued for what she is, and men encourage her to accomplishments yet she remains eternally feminine.â⬠Some other famous women scientists includeà Marie Curie,à Maria Goeppert-Mayer, Mary Somerville, andà Rosalind Franklin.

Gender Inequality And The Oppression Of Women - 2144 Words
CP629 ââ¬â Second Thoughts: Women Novelists from Bronte to Jelinek Assignment 2 (3000 words) Gender is a theme that has been greatly explored and challenged within literature. This essay will compare the theme of gender, specifically gender inequality and the oppression of women within a dominant patriarchal society, in Simone de Beauvoirââ¬â¢s The Second Sex and Virginia Woolfââ¬â¢s A Room of Oneââ¬â¢s Own. De Beauvoirââ¬â¢s primary thesis is that men oppress women by characterising them, and the stereotypes of women are there because men put them there: the man is transcendent and essential, where the woman is insignificant and mutilated, doomed to inwardness, waiting for him to save her. De Beauvoir accepts the fact that as humans, we naturally understand ourselves to be in opposition to others, but by identifying the woman as the ââ¬ËOtherââ¬â¢, the man is, effectively, denying her humanity and objectifying her. De Beauvoir explores the notion that, just as racial issues are created by white people, feminist issues are created by men, and that it is the man who insists on female mediocrity: ââ¬Ë[T]he whole of feminine history has been man-made. Just as in America there is no Negro problem, but rather a white problem; just as anti-Semitism is not a Jewish problem, it is our problem; so the woman problem has always been a man problemââ¬â¢ De Beauvoir draws this parallel between women and the various oppressed classes, but presents one clear difference: the woman is not a minority, and nor hasShow MoreRelatedFeminism Is An Interdisciplinary Idea881 Words à |à 4 Pagesfeminism broadens our ideas on gender and transforms it into a major field of study. Two Side of the Same Coin Justice and Peace Essay Example
Two Side of the Same Coin: Justice and Peace Essay Two sides of the same coin: Justice and Peace By: Melduard Hernandez One of the latest news today is about the Vizconde Massacre. As what the DOJ Officials said, ââ¬Å"It is a long road back to 1991. â⬠The related rumors were why it is that Hubert Webb and other accused persons acquitted by the Supreme Court of the Philippines? Who are the real suspects of the case? Why is it that eye witness Jessica Alfaro considered now as false witness? There were so many questions and mysteries that were attached in the case since it was happened. The fact that the symbol for justice was a scale was not appropriate if we were going to connect it with the issue of Vizconde Massacre. A scale symbolizes equilibrium and balance. It is most often depicted with a set of scales typically suspended from her left hand, upon which it measures the strengths of a cases support and opposition. But how can we obtain Justice if it is really hard to get? Is justice already gone with the wind? There is a saying ââ¬Å"Justice denied anywhere diminishes justice everywhere. If we are going to analyze this statement, it is somehow refers to the if justice is denied, or not given to one person or many people, then over time justice loses its value. No one believes in it anymore because it fails. So it only means that everyone deserves justice. Justice as we all know is not payable by means of property, estate, belongings, possessions, or even realty. Justice is not measured by the status of victim and the suspect in their respective society. Peace, on the other hand is somewhat needed by the involved persons in the issue in order to obtain justice. Peace is commonly understood as the absence of hostility or the existence of healthy or newly healedà interpersonalà orà international relationships, safety in matters of social or economic welfare, the acknowledgment of equality and fairness in political relationships. In international relations,à peacetimeà is the absence of anyà warà or conflict. Peace must be sustainable. One may provide a multitude of examples in recent practice to show that justice without peace is not sustainable. Everyone wants to have peace for the reason that this is the basic step in getting the justice that we want. Peaceà describes a society or a relationship that is operating harmoniously and without violent conflict. Over all, peace and justice are the two sides of the coin. If the two virtues are going to apply in any cases that will happen and will be open from the past, for sure, the victims will get the right justice that they want. Not only in the murder cases and massacres but also in the everyday living of the people in the community, if we try to sustain our hearts with peace and serve it to our fellowships, we will obtain justice.

A Pair of Tickets Essay Example A Pair of Tickets Paper A Pair of Tickets Paper Essay Topic: Literature In the short story A Pair of Tickets, by judging from the title one might think that this is a simple story more about adventure than anything else. In ââ¬Å"A Pair of Ticketsâ⬠The author Amy Tan uses a symbols to help us understand the theme the story. Family and Culture are the most important topic in this story therefore; it gives us a better understanding of the story. As stated in the context of the story ââ¬Å"Jing-mei is on a train to China, traveling with her seventy-two-year-old father, Canning Woo. As the train enters Shenzhen, China, Jing-mei begins to feel Chinese. Their first stop will be Guangzhou. After her mothers death, a letter arrived from China from her mothers twin daughters from her first marriage. These were the two children whom she was forced to abandon on the side of the road On the hand, the internal conflict that the narrator faced while find her true identity is what helps to present the main theme of this story is ultimately love, the sacrifices that people make for love. The story takes place in china. The setting of this story is very important as it all revolts around the Chinese culture. One as a reader can be able to place oneself in the same situation and experience the feelings that are being presented in this story. The story is being told from a first person point of view. The narrator is Jing-Mei ââ¬Å"June Mayâ⬠Woo. She is the 36-year old American born daughter of Suyuan a women who made the big decision which was to abandoned her twins, however she did it for love because at the time she thought she was going to die. June May is the one telling the story. We only know what the narrator thinks. We can only make inferences about the rest of the characters in the story by the way they behave. The narrator embarks an adventurous journey. Along the way she learns many things about her real roots she discovers things that she never knew before. This family is a very united family in the sense that they make decisions together and look out for each other. The author comes from a very family oriented kind of family and this reflects in ââ¬Å"A Pair of Ticketsâ⬠. This was all inside the main character in this story she has Chinese blood, she is discovering what she thought would be a new world yet, she is having an easy time coping with it. The way she was in America is different to the way she is in china. For instance when she is in the airport she is not wearing makeup. The sacrifices made for love between parent and child. Almost every character in this story made a scarified for love the main character for instance, tries to reconcile with her real roots and goes to china to carrying with her motherââ¬â¢s dreams of coming home. June may is going to meet her twin sisters something that her mother would of like her to do. June May is to meet the lost twins this reunion will fulfill Suyuanââ¬â¢s dream. She struggles to find her inner self yet she did it for love to her mother despite all the obstacles that she came across such as language and culture. In the end she understands and accepts the importance of her Chinese heritage. Another example is June May mothers she abandoned her twins because she knew they were going to be better without her because she thought she was going to die On the other hand, the family members at the hotel want to eat American food is ironical that while they are in china and June May might expect Chinese food they all want to order hamburgers and fries and this is the deciding they want to eat it not June May. She thinks that in china there are not places like that. Jing-mei is not sure of her heritage. She has been denying herself of any Chinese heritage that is that is in her, Americanizing herself as much as possible to avoid her real self. This trip to China surely change all that. At last, she realized things she never had before at her 36 years of age she has never felt so alive and fulfilled. While June May is exploring different aspects of China, she is forced to deal with the internal conflict of false impression of china, this is showed when she goes the hotel and is so luxurious. Americans think that they are the only ones that have certain things yet when you go to a less develop country you see that they have better things. It is the perfect American country that makes us believe that there is nothing better out there that we are the best of the best. The really is different and June May have to go to china to realized this to be true. The believes and assumptions that Americans carried are not realistic. When the story begins June May has a wrong image of what it means to be Chinese. It is one governed by American culture, stereotyping, and prejudice. As she learns of her mothers sacrifices and life, and she sees her Chinese family all that image starts to change. At the end she learned to understand and respect her family. In this story in not only June May that is discovering her heritage but also her father is reconnecting with his childhood in china. Finally, June May is not denying her roots she was just not exposed to it before but visiting china changed all that now June May knows what does it means to be Chinese. I wasnââ¬â¢t hard because it was inside her it was nothing that she had to go find because it was in her. This story show the importance of family and how the love that you get from your family is the most essential things that I human needs because it really helps to shape who you are and who you will become later on in life. In todays society peoples background are always being pushed to the background due to the pressures on people to conform and just be like everyone else. How she abandoned the twins and the words the author uses to describe this moment are very emotional. The story is thus very touching and realistic and that is due to the authors background growing up. Knowing the authors biography also help us see the story from another perspective. As a younger woman Amy Tan was very much like June May. Americans and Chinese are not only different because of the cultural background but also their values are very different than the one that American have. Amy was a Chinese girl growing up in a world where she was surrounded by Chinese and American influences. Many people have a hard time finding their true identify. Once you are born in one place and move or become citizen of a different place. You are considered that where you are is what others think you are. For instance, when I go to the Dominican republic Iââ¬â¢m not considered what I am anymore Iââ¬â¢m Dominican but they call me something different Dominican-York. It is hard because in this country Iââ¬â¢m just Dominican and in my own country Iââ¬â¢m just another Dominican-York. I belong nowhere anymore. I donââ¬â¢t belong here or there. In the beginning Jing-mei is not sure of her heritage. She has been denying herself of any Chinese heritage that is that is in her, Americanizing herself as much as possible to avoid her real self. This trip to China surely change all that. At last, she realized things she never had before at her 36 years of age she has never felt so alive and fulfilled. During the trip to China and while she spends time with her relatives Jing-mei begins to reflect on the Chinese side of her life. All her life she had fought her inner Chinese. All the series of events such as the death of her mother and meting her sister finally make May June Reinvent herself. In conclusion, the trip to china was changed June Mayââ¬â¢s life forever. She is not the same person after she leaves china now she wants to embrace her heritage
